Recycling Projects

At Crossroads Industrial, we know our work is part of a bigger picture: That’s why we are actively involved in several recycling projects, to help reduce waste and maximize material. Please explore our used book recycling and EPS projects below.

  • Used Book Recycling

Working together with our partners Giggil (green is good, good is less) and Amazon, Crossroads Industrial plays a role in scanning and sorting used books for resale. First, the books are collected by charitable organizations, library systems, and municipalities. Next, Crossroads Industrial Services scans each book and determines its value. Valuable books are then sent to Amazon, where the books’ online sale generates a profit for the donating charity. Books with little retail value are recycled and sold for paper pulp. Currently, this project creates employment for 5 people with disabilities and processes over 3,000 books per day.

  • EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)

As part of the Circle of Sustainability, Crossroads Industrial proudly works alongside partners from Wal-Mart, Gateway, and Uniek to facilitate expanded Polystyrene/Styrofoam (EPS) recycling. A product typically used as packaging material in appliance boxes, EPS is often thrown away or sent directly to a landfill. To help reduce the amount of waste, Crossroads Industrial now collects Wal-Mart’s EPS material, and compacts and reprocesses it into plastic pellets. These pellets are then injection molded into black picture frames, manufactured by Uniek, and then sold in Wal Mart stores. This initiative has created 5 to 10 jobs for people with disabilities, and effectively diverts 240,000 pounds or 120 tons of landfill-bound polystyrene each year.
